Well whether you know about it or not the thing is Brink just went free-to-play on steam. Yeah the game just went free to play and it probably has something to do with Quakcon. A show of good will by the guys at Bethesda. The only thing you can spend money on in the game are a few cosmetics and a pack that contains weapon attachments, a few new maps and player abilities.

Oh and more costumes. It is a class based shooter where you play as one of the two factions of Security or Resistance. It is set in the once-Utopian city of Ark. The game was heavily focused on parkour movement. So that players could freely move through the environment. The thing that they did like however was the free movement but not enough to forgive everything else. But we should consider that people expect a certain level of content when they pay for something. Not meeting those expectations obviously means there will be backlash.

The PC version of Brink became free-to-play on 22 August By noting a player’s position and predicting what he is trying to do, the system automatically navigates complex environments without interaction. By holding down the SMART button, a player will automatically clear obstacles without the need of complex button input from the player, like in Mirror’s Edge.

There are four character classes: Soldier, Medic, Engineer, and Operative. Players can customize their loadouts and buy special abilities with experience points, which are earned by completing objectives. The abilities that the player can buy for their character are either “universal” abilities that the player will be able to use regardless of their class during a mission and class-specific abilities that the player can use only when they are in that class.

All characters in the beginning will have the “basic kits” of each class so that they can perform the essential objectives only. The class-specific abilities that they buy, however, can enhance their ability and their role in a certain class, potentially making objectives easier to complete and allowing for a greater gain in experience points.

Multiplayer modes are played in the same maps as the single player. While there are enough game modes, it would be a lot more fun with simpler HUD and better maps. There is plenty of room for improvement with future patches and downloadable content in Brink, but as it stands it is simply too short and lacking in content to compete in the FPS Market.

Call of Duty, Battlefield and Homefront to name a few, offer much better and multiplayer gameplay, with more content to boot. Brink’s mix of free-running and FPS is a good idea, but it fails to live up to expectations, and the game overall just doesn’t have enough content.
