It does only cover the basics–there is another book with more advanced skills–but it covers them in a very clear, concise way. You can follow along step by step and learn functions like saving and opening projects, navigating the software, creating software simulations, etc.
It’s very useful, though again it’s only the basics–for that reason it does seem a little pricey. I’ve gone through the whole book and am looking to learn more, so I may even purchase the more advanced one.
Overall, I’m happy with it. This exercise book is worthwhile for anyone who wants to learn some of the more intermediate features provided in Captivate 9. Exercises are thorough and with the exception of one inaccessible, expired exercise file has thoughtful, well documented exercises and sample files. I’ve taken all of the available tutors on Captivate at Lynda. This book offered useful information that was not available at either of those resources.
One person found this helpful. I’m only three chapters into the book, but so far every exercise has worked exactly as advertised. I experienced a couple of Mac-specific hiccups, but on reviewing the text found that the author had included VERY helpful work-arounds — and the work-arounds solved every glitch I’ve encountered. Nice work! Captivate is obviously a ton of fun to work with, and Mr. Siegel makes it easy to dive in.
I’ve already ordered his Beyond the Essentials book. I highly recommend these books for anyone that wants to learn Captivate 9. You don’t just read about how to use Captivate, you actually follow well thought out modules that provide hands-on activities.
