O ne of the most common questions I get asked by friends and musicians who use Logic Pro, concerns recording to external hard drives. I personally fall into all three categories. Both have GB rpm drives, but both can be quite full depending on the day of the week, and worrying about the HDD locking up due to a lack of speed is just something that I cannot afford to have happen during a session.
H ere is a basic walk-through of how I work with external drives. This is absolutely NOT the only way to work: your workflow and method of file handling should be whatever makes you comfortable and whatever will make you consistently follow the same practices every time you start to work. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question. Hi, I am wondering how to move Logic Pro X and all of its files to a hard drive. If at all possible, I would like to house the app on the external hard drive instead of on my computer.
In saying that, I don’t know if this is something that I can do. I’ve seen other posts but they are a couple of years old and I’m not sure if they are still valid. Posted on Jul 12, AM. I wouldn’t recommend moving the Logic Pro X app itself from the system drive. Not sure if that’s even possible. It doesn’t take a lot of disk space per se. You’ll need to create symbolic links for folders on your system drive where macOS stores the bulk of Logic’s sound library.
LaCie and G-Drive have both been very good to me over the years in terms of external options. That way you have the option of running intensive libraries and instruments from your internal, while still affording you lots of terabytes on your much less expensive external HDD.
It has never failed and streams large sample libraries just fine. When it comes to SSD options, prices begin to soar through the roof. This is essentially an external hub that connects loads of external solid state drives to your Mac via Thunderbolt. Clearly these kinds of solutions are ideal for serious content creators, but are more than likely overkill for everyone else. Even as someone that does professional recording and production work on a regular basis, this is still a little out of my league despite really needing it.

Justin Kahn. Today we are taking a look at how to relocate the Logic Pro Sound Library and keep all of the new content organized. For professionals with massive external sound and sample libraries, moving the Logic Sound Library to a drive of choice is a must, but it can also be quite handy for just about anyone with limited internal storage. And there is one thing to quickly point out here for new users before we move on as well.
Thereafter, you can move just the lighter Essential Content aspect of the entire Sound Library to a custom-selected external drive or storage location.
And whether you updated to Logic Pro X Relocating the Sound Library moves it for both apps. Apple Loops, Impulse Responses, and third-party content is not included when moving or relocating the sounds. From here, we can see an itemized list of the included content packs that make up the Logic Pro Sound Library. Simply click the checkboxes of the packs you want to download and hit install. Although these days it does seems like better performance and lesser capacity for a more concentrated library of sound content is the way to go for us.
Let us know in the comments below which storage options are working best for you. Do not rename the external drive after this transfer has been made. There are times when Logic Pro X will present you with an error when trying to relocate the Sound Library.
Providing the desired storage location is compatible and formatted as instructed above, this can be due to a quick permissions issue, and you might just need to give Logic Pro access to your new library storage medium:. From there click the Security and Privacy icon, then the Privacy tab on the top, and hit that lock icon in the bottom left corner so you can make changes.
In the left column, click full Disk Access and select the checkbox next to Logic Pro in the app window on the right. Simply follow the relocation steps above, but be sure to choose your internal Macintosh HD as the new, relocated Sound Library destination. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.
